42 - My computer, it's alive!
Good news everyone, I got my computer back up and running! Well I’m using an older CPU and motherboard, but it working. So let’s turn back a bit and talked about what happened last night. After one of my roommates finished work he decided to start building his media server with the new parts. I heard some rustling around out in the living room so I poked my head out to see what was going on. I saw him starting to unpack some of the computer parts so I asked if he wanted any help. Around two hours later we finished. Well it took a bit longer than that because we had to troubleshoot why only one hard drive was working. Turns out the power cable was plugged in wrong, whatever we figured it out. We then booted it up and windows started. We put the panels back on and got it all hooked up. Then he told me I could do whatever with what was left of the old media server. I grabbed it and brought it to my room. I didn’t do anything with it last night cause I figured it would take some time to do. But then today I started to pull things out of it. I pretty much tore it completely apart to get what I needed. I ended up taking some screws alongside the CPU and mobo. I then took out what was broken in my computer, along with the liquid cooling and put everything back together. I hooked up a monitor and it booted right up into windows, awesome. Sadly it’s not anywhere near what it was though. My last CPU was 8 core running at 4.7ghz. This one is 2 core running at 3ghz. Oh well I can make things work, somehow. Also my RAM isn’t working at it’s normal speed because the motherboard doesn’t handle that kind of speeds. That’s less of a big deal. I started up FFXIV and was able to log in, good thing to cause I raid tonight. It took a while to load, but once in I turned down some of the settings and it ran fine enough. Now the big question is, can I stream on it? Well honestly I don’t know. It took me a few hours to put everything together and clean up a bit and make sure it was working. But tomorrow I’m going to try to stream. I don’t think I’ll be able to record locally, but since I have solid internet that’s not a problem. I can just stream then upload the VOD from twitch to youtube. Now if I can’t stream on this computer I have an idea, but it’s a little bit of a crazy setup. Curious? Well I could hook up one of my monitors with a HDMI cable instead, but run it through a capture card I have. Then I could hook up the capture card to the laptop they are letting me use. Then stream off the laptop, but code off of my main computer. Sounds pretty annoying, so I hope I don’t have to do any of that. I can’t wait to get a job, I’ll be able to upgrade my computer, get some cheap car, and live with my wife and kid again. I think that’s the worst thing about all of this. I haven't seen my wife in a few days. Now we have spent time apart before. At my last job I had to go out to San Francisco for a week. I’m sure we will be fine, but it does suck. Well I think that’s really it for today. Hope to see you live tommorow over at twitch.
